Founding members of Kathwood made the decision to organize a new church to break out of the mold and practice of most Baptist churches of yesteryear. The purpose of our group was to be more open, progressive, and receptive to change, to be more innovative, and to be different – to make a difference.

For Kathwood’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, October 2014, long-time member R. D. Roberts penned a text to be used for a commissioned work by Larry Schultz.

R. D. was inspired to capture the essence of the hopes and dreams and goals of the Kathwood family. This text was timely in 2014 and is even more so today.  ~ Rev. Burt Pardue, Minister of Music

Tear Down the Walls
text: R. D. Roberts, music: Larry Schultz

Inside these walls of brick and stone the church has come today; and here, within our sacred space, we worship God and pray. But there are walls we cannot see that keep all others out; and so, with voices joined as one, we’ll boldly preach and shout: “Tear down the walls of hatred, pride and race! Rebuild the walls that shelter love, acceptance, truth and grace.” Tear down the walls that separate us, Lord, and make us one – your holy name adored. Outside these walls of brick and stone are neighbors passing by. We see their need and feel their pain; we hear their plaintive cry. While reaching out in loving care and with our justice-song, we’ll bring them all into this house – a place where all belong! Tear down the walls of hatred, pride and race! Rebuild the walls that shelter love, acceptance, truth and grace. Tear down the walls that separate us Lord, and make us one – your holy name adored. In Christ distinctions are undone: in Christ, no rich or poor, no male or female all are one and welcomed through our door! Within these walls of love and grace we fashion for today an open and embracing space, where all may sing and pray: “O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home!” Tear down the walls of hatred, pride and race! Rebuild the walls that shelter love, acceptance, truth and grace.” Tear down the walls that separate us, Lord, and make us one – your holy name adored. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be now our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home! And our eternal home!
